Browser-side encryptionīrowser-side encryption makes possible to encrypt your data in the web interface of Research Drive, but this should be set up also at the client side and SURF can not currently support this.Boxcryptor is a cloud encryption software that helps individuals as well as companies to protect their cloud storage including Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and more. Other similar encryption tools are availbale, e.g. I switched from BoxCryptor to Cryptomator some years ago. If you add, modify or delete a file, only 1 file changes not the whole vault. You cant read the folder or file names like with BoxCryptor. The video below shows you how Cryptomator works together with Research Drive: A Cryptomator vault (file based) consists of its config file and many encrypted folders and files, depending on what you put inside. You have to do this in a secure manner like an encrypted email and this person needs to have Cryptomator installed. But you will need to get the password you have used to encrypt the key to the vault to the person you are sharing your data with. When you right click any file, you will see the Boxycryptor menu and will have the option to encrypt it, or to select another task from the list. If you want to share your encrypted data with someone, then you can share your vault using Research Drive. All data you put in your vault on your computer will be encrypted and then sent to Research Drive. Then you can create a vault inside you sync folder. What you could do is to use Cryptomator together with Research Drive is to install the Owncloud sync client that syncs the contents of a folder in your computer to Research Drive. The vault can be unlocked by starting up the Cryptomator software and type in your password. The encryption key will also reside in the vault but it is encrypted with a password. In this vault you can put your data that will be encrypted. Using Cryptomator you create an encrypted folder called a vault. There are also mobile clients for iOS and Android. With Boxcryptor, you encrypt your files before uploading them to Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams and many other providers without sacrificing safety, privacy or comfort. The Cryptomator software is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. If you want to manage the keys yourself and encrypt your files before uploading them there is a tool called Cryptomator that you can use. But that is server-side encryption where the keys are managed by the storage system. The Research Drive backend storage system is encrypted.
